Proton Therapy vs. Radiation Therapy: A Patient Guide

Proton Therapy vs. Radiation Therapy: A Patient Guide

Proton therapy is a form of external-beam radiation therapy that uses the Bragg peak to reduce exit dose beyond a tumor, but this does not mean it is more effective for every patient. Whether it is worth choosing depends on tumor location, stage, age, previous treatment, and dose distribution to nearby organs. Some studies suggest that proton therapy may reduce severe side effects, but it has not been shown consistently to improve survival. Before deciding, patients should obtain a written comparison of proton therapy and modern photon radiation therapy, including the number of treatments, potential side effects, follow-up arrangements, costs, insurance coverage, and continuity of care when treatment is provided overseas.

Can International Health Insurance Be Used at Hospitals in China?

Whether international health insurance can be used at a hospital in China depends on the specific policy, geographic coverage, treatment, designated hospital, and payment arrangements—not the insurer’s brand name. Before traveling, patients should obtain written confirmation from the insurer, verify coverage for the planned treatment, determine whether preauthorization or a guarantee of payment is required, and confirm whether the hospital can bill the insurer directly. If direct billing is unavailable, patients should be prepared to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later while retaining itemized quotations, invoices, medical records, authorization documents, and correspondence. A hospital quotation is not a promise of payment by the insurer, and insurance approval does not necessarily mean the hospital accepts cashless treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions patients actually ask us in consultation. Nothing here is medical advice.

Is it safe to receive medical treatment in China? chevron_right

At the top tier, yes. The hospitals we coordinate with are JCI-accredited or hold equivalent international accreditation, and their leading surgeons often trained or practiced at top institutions in the US, Europe, or Japan and perform high case volumes every year.

But quality in China varies a lot outside that tier, and accreditation is a floor, not a guarantee. We only work with international departments of accredited hospitals, we show you which hospital and doctor we propose and why, and we encourage you to verify credentials and ask questions before you commit.

How much can I save compared to treatment at home? chevron_right

Often 40–80% versus US, UK, or EU list prices for the same procedure at the international department rate. But the real number depends on your case, the hospital, the package, and how your home country prices and insures the same care, so we won't quote a percentage without your records.

What we can promise: you pay the hospital's own official international rate, the same price a local self-pay patient would see. We add zero markup to your hospital bill. You get a written, itemized quote before you pay anything.

Do I need to speak Chinese to receive treatment? chevron_right

No, not for your care. Partner hospitals have English-speaking international staff and professional medical translators, and your coordinator is bilingual and on call throughout your stay, including at appointments and during consent.

Outside the hospital, English penetration varies by city and neighborhood. We handle logistics (hotel, transport, pharmacy, food delivery) so day-to-day language barriers don't fall on you.

How do I get follow-up care after returning home? chevron_right

You leave with full bilingual medical records: discharge summary, operative notes, imaging, pathology, and a written follow-up plan in your language. We can also arrange a remote follow-up consultation with your Chinese medical team, and we share records with your physician at home with your consent.

Ongoing care after you return is the responsibility of your physician at home. We are not a substitute for local follow-up, and we won't promise continuity we can't deliver.

What's included in your service fee, and what's not? chevron_right

Included: pre-trip consultation, records review, hospital and doctor matching, written quote, treatment scheduling, airport pickup, hotel booking, local SIM, bilingual coordination, escort to appointments, real-time translation, and family updates.

Not included: hospital medical fees (billed separately by the hospital, paid to the hospital), flights, visa fees, hotel nights (we book, you pay the hotel), meals, and any care you need after you return home.

Our fee is a flat service package, shown to you in writing before you pay. There is no commission added to your hospital bill.

How do you choose which hospital to match me with? chevron_right

We match on your condition, the required specialty, accreditation (JCI or equivalent), documented case volume for your procedure, and your budget. We usually propose two or three hospitals with a written rationale, and you choose.

We do not rank hospitals by how much they pay us, because they don't. Hospital listings on this site are based on public accreditation data and our own research, not referral commissions. How we make money is disclosed on our About page.

What happens if there's a complication during or after treatment? chevron_right

Medically, your hospital and your doctors carry the clinical responsibility and the medical liability, as they would for any patient. We are not a medical provider and we do not carry medical liability.

Practically, we help with what a coordinator can: extending your stay, rebooking flights, keeping your family informed, arranging a second opinion or transfer if needed, and translating between you and the care team. Medical decisions stay between you and your doctors.

Can you guarantee treatment success or specific outcomes? chevron_right

No. No honest service can, and you should be wary of any that does. Outcomes depend on your condition, your doctors, and factors no coordinator controls. What we can do is give you access to accredited hospitals and experienced specialists, a clear quote, and honest information to make your own decision.

Do I need a visa, and can you help with it? chevron_right

It depends on your nationality and how long you stay. Citizens of many countries can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, which covers most short treatments. Longer stays usually need an S2 or M visa supported by a hospital invitation letter.

We help coordinate hospital invitation letters and share checklists based on common practice, but consulates make the final decision and rules change. We are not a visa service. Always confirm requirements with your local embassy.

How long do I need to stay, and can my family come? chevron_right

It depends on the procedure: a few days for dental work or a health checkup, one to three weeks for many surgeries, and longer for complex oncology or rehab. We give you an estimated stay before you commit, and we adjust it with your doctor once a treatment plan is set.

Family can travel with you on their own visas. We can arrange family lodging and a second coordinator if needed. We'll be straight with you if a companion plan adds cost or complexity.
