What 874 products actually show
17 of 874
publish a complete public China hospital list
Only 1.9% of researched products make their mainland-China network fully public. Most publish nothing, a partial list, or keep the directory behind a member login.
29%
of network hospitals sit in just two cities — Shanghai and Beijing
Direct-billing capacity concentrates hard in tier-1 cities, and the top eight cities account for roughly half of all verified hospital relationships.
1 in 10
products explicitly exclude mainland China
84 products rule out mainland China in the covered-area definition — an exclusion that is easy to miss until a claim is denied.
Where insurer networks reach in China
Every hospital relationship in our research, rolled up by city — 163 cities across 187 insurer brands.
Insurer networks cluster along China's eastern seaboard. Coverage thins quickly beyond the largest cities, with limited presence in central and western provinces — so where you are treated matters as much as what your policy says.
Aggregated across all researched plans and insurers. Dot size reflects the number of verified hospital relationships in each city.

What this means for you —
If your hospital is outside the top eight cities, plan for pay-and-claim — and get the payment path confirmed in writing before you travel.

The single largest group — 342 products — covers a worldwide area with no fixed China hospital list. That is not a refusal: the cover is real, but no hospital is pre-approved, so the payment path has to be arranged for each admission.
Every researched product, including those that reach China through a TPA or assistance partner, is verified against its own evidence — never inherited from a brand or group name.
What this means for you —
A worldwide plan is not a no — but direct billing must be arranged per admission, so start pre-authorisation early.

Methodology
How we verify coverage
Every verdict on this page traces back to a documented research standard. This is what makes the answers defensible.
Public evidence only
Every conclusion cites official insurer documents — policy wordings, network directories, benefit tables — each with a source URL and retrieval date.
Legal-entity binding
Products are bound to their exact underwriting entity. Neither a group brand name nor the TPA that administers the hospital network is treated as the insurer that carries your risk.
No inheritance
Hospital relationships are never copied across products, brands, markets or group companies. Each product earns its own evidence.
Graded confidence
Evidence is graded A to C and refreshed each release. Where evidence is weak or member-only, the verdict says so instead of guessing.
Based on public evidence as of 2026-08-03 (release R295). This is research information, not insurance advice, a payment guarantee or a contract interpretation. Eligibility, covered area, pre-authorisation, GOP, direct billing and payout always depend on your current policy and final confirmation by your insurer and the hospital.
Questions patients actually ask
What is direct billing, exactly? add
The hospital settles the bill directly with your insurer, so you only pay your deductible, co-pay and non-covered items. Without direct billing you pay the full bill upfront and claim it back later. Direct billing always requires your eligibility to be confirmed first — usually via pre-authorisation.
What is a guarantee of payment (GOP)? add
A written commitment from your insurer to the hospital, issued before admission, that it will pay for defined treatment up to defined limits. It is the standard mechanism for planned inpatient care when there is no standing network agreement — and it is arranged per case, which is why lead time matters.
My plan says "worldwide coverage". Why isn't that a yes? add
"Worldwide" describes the covered area, not a hospital network. Whether a specific Chinese hospital can bill your insurer directly is a separate, product-level fact. Many worldwide plans pay for treatment in China only through pre-authorisation and reimbursement — which works, but you need to know before you travel.
Why can't you just show me the full hospital list? add
Two reasons. First, accuracy: lists apply per product, and pasting them out of context creates false confidence. Second, this database is our own research asset — we share the full picture in a personalised report, matched to your exact plan, rather than as a scrapeable table.
Is this insurance advice? add
No. It is research based on public documents, with a stated cutoff date and evidence grades. Your policy certificate and your insurer's written confirmation always take precedence. We tell you what the public evidence supports and which questions to ask — the final word belongs to your insurer.
My insurer isn't listed. Can you still help? add
Yes. Corporate and group plans are often not publicly documented, so they may not appear in the search. Send us your insurer and plan name and a coordinator will research it manually against the same standards, free of charge.
Our honest position
We are not a hospital or a clinic
MedicalToChina is an independent medical travel information and patient coordination service. We do not employ physicians and we do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Zero marked-up medical fees
We do not add a margin to your hospital bill. You pay the hospital's own official international department rate, the same price a local patient would see. Our fee is a transparent service package, billed separately and shown to you in writing before you pay.
Independent editorial, no paid placements
Hospital listings are based on public accreditation data and our own research, not on referral commissions. We disclose how we make money on our About page.
Medical disclaimer
Nothing on this page is medical advice. Always consult a licensed physician before making decisions about diagnosis, treatment, or travel for care.
No outcome guarantees
We never promise specific medical results. Outcomes depend on your condition and your doctors, not on us. Any service that guarantees a result is not being honest with you.
Your data, your control
We only share your medical records with hospitals you choose, and only with your consent. We do not sell your data, and we do not pass it to third parties for marketing.
